Personality and Temperament

Also known as the Tiffanie or Tiffany cat, the Asian semi-longhair cat is a fairly new breed that was developed in the 1980s.

A lucky accident led to a gorgeous new feline with a soft, silky coat in a medium length. Not only are these cats beautiful, they are playful, curious, and friendly. Much like the Asian cats they were developed from, these kitties have a tendency to vocalize loudly and make their opinions known. They are loving and devoted to their families and they are known to display jealousy toward other pets who get in the way or demand affection.

Asian semi-longhair cats are playful and curious. They are not above stealing small objects that attract their attention, so pet parents should keep a close watch on important personal items!

Health

Asian semi-longhair cats do not have any special nutritional needs. However, diets that are high in omega-3 fatty acids promote soft, lustrous coats. When choosing a high-quality diet for your cat, be sure that this nutrient is included.

Because these kitties don't have thick undercoats, they are a bit less prone to matting then other medium to long haired cat breeds. Still, they benefit from regular brushing. Grooming your cat a few times per week helps remove any loose hairs that might find their way into your cat's digestive tract later and lead to hairball formation.

In addition, brushing your cat is another opportunity to bond. Since Asian semi-longhairs love attention, they will truly appreciate frequent grooming sessions. Consider brushing your cat's teeth, and consider treating them to regular nail trims.

Asian semi-longhair cats look soft and fluffy, but this doesn't mean that they spend all their time lounging. The truth is, these felines have a very frisky side! Running, climbing, jumping, and pouncing keep their muscles in good shape and promote overall well-being.

Be sure to give your cat a basketful of toys, scratching posts, and a cat tower. Asian semi-longhair cats seem to enjoy staring out windows a little more than most other cats, so a window seat might be appreciated as well – perhaps with a birdfeeder outside!

As you may have guessed, Asian semi-longhair cats really enjoy interactive play. These cats are highly trainable and can learn games such as fetch.

As with hybrids in general, Asian semi-longhair cats tend to enjoy good health. They do not suffer from any known health issues, and their average lifespan is approximately 15 years.

History

The first Asian semi-longhair cats were the result of an unintentional breeding between the Burmese and the chinchilla Persian. The Burmilla cat breed comes from the same cross, however it displays a silver shaded shorthair coat.

The Asian Group Cat Society was formed in 1985 to advance the Asian semi-longhair cat and similar breeds. Even though these cats are attractive, exceptionally friendly, and pleasing in every way, the breed has been slow to catch on. England's Governing Council of the Cat Fancy awarded its official recognition in 2003. So far, the breed is not recognized by registries in the United States.
