Cat Called Otto
When two New Yorkers returned home to their Bronx apartment in August 2023, they were surprised to find an abandoned cat on their steps. They named him Otto.
And they could see that Otto had been through a lot.
An orange cat in his not-so golden years
It was clear that Otto was a starving senior cat who was in overall bad health. “He was visibly frail but friendly enough to let me give him some food and water.”
To help with his mobility, Otto’s adoptive parents shaved his matted fur, which had been hindering his ability to move freely.
However, they knew he needed medical attention that they couldn’t provide, so they took Otto to see a veterinarian.
Pawesome progress
Luckily, Otto got a clean bill of health outside of two easily treated infections. He got his shots, was microchipped, and sent on his way. Slowly but surely, Otto’s healing journey was underway, and he began to come out of his shell.
He also gained some weight, and his hair began to grow back in no time!

As his love for his new humans grew, so did his obsession for one toy in particular.
A fruity fairytale ending
His new mom did some digging into the best toys for senior cats and decided to buy Otto a catnip toy banana. It was nothing short of a game-changer.

“He loved that catnip banana—and still does,” his mom said. “He would cuddle up with it and take naps.”
His humans explained that Otto loves his banana as if it’s the first toy he’s ever had. The photographic evidence confirming that point is a pure delight to see.

With his new therapy banana in-paw, Otto has continued to find his confidence.
A warm welcome to the family
His humans slowly introduced Otto to his two adopted cat siblings, Sam and Dean, and it went surprisingly well. “We didn’t see any signs of aggression, which we were super happy about.”

Otto is thriving—in real life and online.
His story has attracted a big following on his Instagram page, which his humans routinely update. But more importantly, the so-called “king of the couch” is leaps and bounds ahead of where he was when they found him.

Otto’s grown ever more affectionate. He lays on the couch with his people, spends time on their laps, and gets groomed daily. “There’s no doubt in my mind that Otto is thoroughly enjoying the new life that we’ve given him when I look into his eyes, and he has clearly found his new forever home with us.”
Otto’s story is proof that you’re never too old to find your people.
