Brand Overview

The Arm & Hammer brand has been around for over 170 years and has become a highly trusted name in American households. Known for their baking soda, this brand has been named America’s #1 Trusted Baking Soda Brand and continues to earn that honor year after year.

In addition to their baking soda, of course, Arm & Hammer also offers a line of household products including cat litter, toothpaste, laundry products, and personal care products.

The Arm & Hammer company got its start in 1846 by brothers-in-law Dr. Austin Church and John Dwight. The brand developed over the next few decades until, in 1867, the Arm & Hammer logo you know today was born.

That logo came to be used on hundreds of household products, including popular cat litters like Arm & Hammer Double Duty, Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal, and more recently, Arm & Hammer Slide. Today, the brand offers dozens of cat litter formulas and related products.

#1 Arm & Hammer Litter Clump & Seal Multi-Cat Scented Clumping Clay Cat Litter

Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Multi-Cat Formula Cat Litter review

Kate Barrington / Cats.com

Multi-cat households often struggle with odor control but finding a litter that forms hard, odor-neutralizing clumps is your best defense. This Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Multi-Cat Litter harnesses the odor-fighting power of Arm & Hammer baking soda and moisture-activated microgranules to seal in odor from feces, urine, and ammonia for an odor-free litter box up to 7 days. It is also extremely low in dust which minimizes tracking and mess.

The first thing we noticed about this Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Multi-Cat Litter is that it had a very sandy texture. We were initially concerned about tracking due to the smaller particles but found that this litter was almost entirely dust-free and extremely low-tracking.

We also found that the power of Arm & Hammer baking soda did its work in providing long-lasting odor control, even with three cats in the household sharing litter boxes.

Pros

  • Forms hard clumps on contact to destroy odors and make cleanup easy

  • Very low dust and low tracking for minimal mess

Cons

  • Litter itself has a slight scent that, while not overpowering, some cats dislike
  • Sandy texture, some cats may not like it
  • Some clumps may break apart during scooping

This litter comes in 14, 19, and 28-pound boxes. Because the litter is made from clay, it can be fairly heavy depending on the size box you purchase.

#2 Arm & Hammer Multi-Cat Slide Easy Clean-Up Formula Cat Litter

Arm & Hammer Multi-Cat Slide Easy Clean-Up Formula Cat Litter review

Kate Barrington / Cats.com

Many cat owners find that their cat litter works well until it comes time to clean out the box. Forming hard clumps and controlling odor are important qualities in a cat litter, but if you have to scrape at the box when it comes time to empty it, what are you really getting out of it?

Arm & Hammer Multi-Cat Slide is designed to slide easily out of the litter box with no scrubbing or scraping. Additionally, it is formulated at multi-cat strength and offers 7-day odor protection.

We found Arm & Hammer Multi-Cat Slide to offer excellent clumping ability and it did, in fact, slide easily out of the litter box at cleaning time. The litter itself had a slight scent that was not unpleasant, and it did a decent job of controlling odors in a multi-cat household.

The main thing we noticed, however, is that it had a very sandy texture like the previous formula (though still almost entirely dust-free) and, as a result, some of the clumps broke apart during scooping.

Category Rating
Price 4/5
Clumping Action 5/5
Odor Control 4/5
Dust/Mess 5/5
Scent 4/5

Overall Rating 4.3/5

Pros

  • Slides easily out of the litter box instead of sticking to the sides
  • Provides a full 7 days of long-lasting odor protection
  • Virtually no dust and very low-mess and low-tracking

Cons

  • Sandy texture, some cats may not like it
  • Some clumps may break apart during scooping
  • Slight scent that some cats may not like

This litter comes in 14, 19, and 28-pound boxes. Because the litter is made from clay, it can be fairly heavy depending on the size box you purchase.

#3 Arm & Hammer Cat Litter Deodorizer Powder

Arm & Hammer Cat Litter Deodorizer Powder

You can’t stop your litter box from producing odor, but you can control it with Arm & Hammer Cat Litter Deodorizer Powder. Made with a powerful blend of Arm & Hammer Baking soda, fragrances, and other ingredients, this powder immediately eliminates odors in all types of litter to keep your litter box smelling fresher longer.

Simply sprinkle it on top or stir it in to enjoy long-lasting odor control. Its moisture-activated scent keeps working time and time again.

We found this product to be very heavily scented, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It is easy to sprinkle in the litter box and the resealable top keeps things fresh.

The powerful odor-fighting formula was great for multi-cat households, but we’re concerned that the scent may be too strong for litter boxes where odor is not specifically a problem. We also found that the product itself was fairly dusty which meant that the litter became a little dustier after use.

Category Rating

  • Scent may be too strong for some cats (try stirring it into the litter)
  • Not a substitute for regularly scooping the litter box
  • Made litter a little bit dustier after use

This litter box deodorizer comes in a 20-ounce or 30-ounce box that can be resealed between uses to keep the product fresh.

What Do Customers Think Of Arm & Hammer Cat Litter?

For the most part, customers are happy with the Arm & Hammer brand as a whole. Many customers have a favorite formula that they are completely loyal to, though they will try others if theirs is not immediately available. Most customers are pleased with the low price point, the hard-clumping action, and the excellent odor control this cat litter has to offer.

This being said, every customer’s experience is unique, and there are both good and bad reviews for the brand online. Keep reading to see a positive and negative customer review for each of the three cat litter formulas featured above:

Positive Reviews

“I have 2 cats and I am lazy. Sometimes I go a few days without cleaning the litter. Sometimes I just pour more clean litter over the dirty litter so I can go even longer before I finally scoop. This litter is pretty good at covering the smell. Bonus points that I can get this shipped to my door and not have to lug it around between the grocery store and parking lot to my car. Minus one star because this litter tracks EVERYWHERE.” – Marina, reviewing Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Multi-Cat Formula

“I have one cat and use a sifting litter box for her. I’ve only emptied the box once since purchasing Arm & Hammer Slide Easy Litter, but all the litter slid out fine without sticking to the bottom of the pan. I used a lot of litter – the entire 14-pound box, in fact, so I think that probably contributes to the non-sticking. Prior to that, my old litter was sticking to the bottom and I had to scrape it off. Time will tell, but overall, very pleased with the product and will continue using as long as it continues to not stick.”- Marnie, reviewing Arm & Hammer Multi-Cat Slide Easy Clean-Up Formula

“Seriously… This stuff works. My cats have been known to have a bad-smelling litter box. When you put this product on the litter, it instantly neutralizes the smell and actually makes everything smell GOOD. I shake it on top and then shake the box to mix it in a bit. It’s an essential part of my litter-scooping routine. I’ve tried regular baking soda, but this is way better. This has OxiClean in it, and that makes a huge difference.”- Lauren, reviewing Arm & Hammer Cat Litter Deodorizer Powder

Negative Reviews

“Store was out of our usual A&H Double Duty, so we tried this. Bad choice. This stuff is a very fine, sandy consistency and after about 2 days, it had a very noticeable sour odor. Could smell it 25 feet away sitting in the other room. This is with 1 male cat in the house. When using Double Duty, you could sit right next to the box and not smell anything. This Clump & Seal is another story. Even using the added A&H Deodorizer sprinkled in that we use, this stuff had terrible odor control. I would not recommend it at all.” – ARS72, reviewing Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Multi-Cat Formula

“I have been searching high and low for a litter that will work in the automatic litter box without binding the motor every time it rakes. After seeing the ads for Slide I set out looking for an unscented version. Much to my frustration, this product does not have an unscented option. I decided to try it anyway and immediately regretting it. The fragrance is so strong I was not able to stay in the room. Poor cats had to be closed up with it until I could get back to the store for another unscented brand. On the up side, this litter did seem to work better for the automatic box, however it was only in the box for 24 hours.”- DesperateforUnscented, reviewing Arm & Hammer Multi-Cat Slide Easy Clean-Up Formula

“I give the regular deodorizer 2 ½ stars and the double duty deodorizer 3 stars. The litter deodorizer has a very strong smell to it so I always make sure I mix it in with the litter after every clean up then just sprinkling it on top. I have also noticed that wen I scoop the litter it is way dustier than before I added the deodorizer. The double duty deodorizer while still as strong of a smell does seem to control/absorb more of the fecal/urine small than the regular deodorizer does but I still have to add a lot.”- KaylaG, reviewing Arm & Hammer Cat Litter Deodorizer Powder

How Much Does Arm & Hammer Cat Litter Cost?

Overall, Arm & Hammer cat litter is very affordable for the quality it delivers. The two cat litters we’ve reviewed above are priced below $0.75 per pound and you can save more by purchasing larger boxes. The litter box deodorizer costs about $1.144 per pound but is sold in a 20- or 30-ounce box for under $3.

Overall, Is Arm & Hammer Cat Litter A Good Choice?

At first glance, we weren’t sure that we were going to like Arm & Hammer cat litter. Despite the affordable price, we’re used to seeing this brand sold in big box stores and grocery stores where quality isn’t always the priority. We were pleasantly surprised, however, after testing two cat litters and one litter deodorizer that the brand keeps to its promises as a whole when it comes to long-lasting odor control, hard-clumping action, and low dust and tracking.

Again, the main thing we noticed about Arm & Hammer cat litter is the sandy texture. This is not necessarily a problem, but it may take getting used to for some cats. This texture also means that clumps sometimes break up into tiny rocks, but they are easily scooped away, and you generally aren’t left with a gluey mess at the bottom of the litter box.

For affordable odor control, we heartily recommend Arm & Hammer cat litter. We look forward to reviewing some of their other products in the future, including some of their natural cat litters.

I’m trying to understand your scale. If each criteria is weighted at 5 points and you have 6 items how are you coming up with 3.5 ratings? Wouldn’t your formula be 26 Divided by 6 resulting in an answer of 4.3?

I’ve been using the Arm & Hammer Slide easy litter for over 1 year. My 2 cats like it and so do I. If I’ve been too busy and skipped cleaning the clumps of pee and poo for a Day, they still use it. It absorbs the odors quickly.y 1 cat has loose bowels frequently, but the litter clumps well around them too. I’m very satisfied and don’t mind paying a little more than the cheap varieties.

Hi Ken, unfortunately, I can’t shed any light on that! It’s an excellent question, though, and perhaps you’ll be able to figure it out. I imagine it may have to do with how the litter was handled during transportation to the store, but I also wouldn’t be able to predict that by looking at the box.

Dump wash fill repeat I meant to type I love it it’s a little expensive I used to buy 2 28 lb box for 16.50 now one 28 lb box is 24 and the 38lb is 30 dollars wish there was option for 80lb bag or at least 60lb

It’s hard for me to get past the smell of the litter. I have one cat and 3 different boxes of litter. She prefers the clump and seal. It doesn’t track like the natural does. That could be why she likes it best. The smell is awful. I’m in an apartment and can smell that litter everywhere. Ugh

I tried the clump & seal multi cat with odor blasters. The SMELL WAS HORRIFIC!!!!! very strong & chemical smelling!!! Cats have 40+ smelling capability! What was I thinking??? I called the 800# and they are refunding my purchase. Sorry A&H…your product sucks!!! There needs to be a CLAY WARNING on EVERY BOX! On what ingesting clay can do to cats!!!!! Shame!!!!

Two weeks ago I bought a box of A&H Double Duty Litter.

It is nowhere near the first box of it I have bought, but they changed the formula and now my cats run from it. If they cannot get outside to do their duty, they throw up on the floor, rather than using their boxes.

I do not know what they did but I am angry that they did it.

It certainly sounds frustrating, Craig. And other cat owners seem to be experiencing similar issues. Hopefully A&H gets the problem sorted out!

Holy cow. Cloud Control Arm and Hammer is the best litter ever. Our old arthritic cat has to go in cat box upstairs because she can’t go up and down anymore. Hate cat box smell. Tried Cloud Control for the first time. No smell, no dust, she can’t fling it everywhere because it is heavier like sand on the beach. I’m sold. You really nailed it with this litter. More expensive but so worth it.
