If you have more than one cat in your home, then you already know that they will likely pollute the litter box pretty quickly.

As good as your litter box may be, having multiple cats using a single litter box can mean that you will need to completely change the litter out more often, but you can keep that replacement schedule to about once a week if you use the right multiple-cat litter product.

There are a number of quality cat litter products that are designed specifically for multi-cat households, and we want to highlight a few of them here for you.

Why Trust Cats.com

Testing-Cat-Litter for multiple cats

Mallory Crusta / Cats.com

Along with other members of the Cats.com team, We’ve personally purchased, tested, and reviewed over two dozen of the most popular cat litter brands and more than 50 individual litter products. The products were purchased at full retail price and the entire testing process was funded by Cats.com without direct input or influence from the companies involved.

How We Tested:

  • We purchased some of the best cat litters on the market today
  • We spent a few weeks testing the cat litters on several cats
  • We did not receive these product in exchange for a favorable review, they were purchased with our own money

When testing cat litter products, I use them in my own home for at least ten days. I make observations about the litter’s appearance, granule size, scent, and dust level when pouring it into the litter box. I also test the litter for odor control, ease of scooping, and tracking. My two cats, make their opinions known when they show preference for one product over another.

7 Best-Rated Cat Litters for Multiple Cats

For households with multiple cats, these litter products stand out as the top choices, they excel in controlling odors, minimizing tracking, to help your space stays fresh and tidy.

#1 Overall Best: World’s Best Cat Litter

Made from natural compressed corn materials, this clumping cat litter is free from silica dust so you and your cat can breathe easy.

It forms tight, hard clumps for easy scooping, and it is biodegradable and flushable   for easy disposal. This cat litter is eco-friendly and unscented, making it an excellent choice for single cat and multi-cat households.

It’s a potent litter that is better than most at eliminating and preventing odors, and all that power comes with a price. You will pay far more for this than you will for anything else on this list. World’s Best Cat Litter is recommended as one of our top picks for overall best cat litter products.

What We Liked:

  • Forms hard, tight clumps on contact with urine and feces
  • Very low dust (no silica dust) compared to clay litters
  • Eco-friendly and all-natural, clumps are flushable for easy disposal

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Lightweight corn kernels may track more than heavier cat litter

#2 Best For Multiple Cats: Arm & Hammer Multi-Cat Clump & Seal Clumping Litter

Multi-cat households often struggle with odor control, so finding a litter that forms hard, odor-neutralizing clumps is your best defense. This Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Multi-Cat Litter harnesses the odor-fighting power of Arm & Hammer baking soda and moisture-activated microgranules to seal in odor from feces, urine, and ammonia for an odor-free litter box for up to 7 days. It is also extremely low in dust, which minimizes tracking and mess.

The first thing we noticed about Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Multi-Cat Litter is that it had a very sandy texture, which could cause some cats to avoid the box.

Despite that, we found that the power of Arm & Hammer baking soda did its work effectively in providing long-lasting odor control, even with three cats in the household sharing litter boxes.

What We Liked:

  • Forms hard clumps on contact to destroy odors and make cleanup easy
  • Power of baking soda ensures a full 7 days of odor protection
  • Very low dust and low tracking for minimal mess

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Sandy texture, some cats may not like it
  • Some clumps may break apart during scooping

#3 Best Low-Tracking: tuft + paw Really Great Cat Litter

tuft + paw Really Great Cat Litter

  • Brand: tuft + paw
  • Material: Soybean byproduct
  • Clumping: Yes
  • Flushable: Yes
  • Features: Biodegradable, low-tracking granules, lightweight
  • Price per lb: $3.05 per lb

Many low-tracking litters are dense and heavy but Really Great Cat Litter from tuft + paw isn’t. It’s made from soybean byproduct and shaped in small, oblong pellets. The shape and size of the pellets helps keep the litter from tracking outside the litter box.

While you’ll pay a premium for this litter, it offers a few benefits few other products can boast. It’s biodegradable and compostable, for one. It’s also flushable. Though you’ll need to let the clumps soak in the toilet for a while before flushing, the material breaks down very well.

In the litter box, this natural cat litter absorbs liquid quickly and forms cohesive clumps. I found that the clumps are a little more delicate than clay litter, but if you scoop slowly they’re less likely to break apart. My cats didn’t seem to mind the texture of the pellets and the formula controls odor well, despite the lack of added fragrance.

What We Liked:

  • Biodegradable, compostable, and flushable
  • Lightweight, low-tracking pellets
  • Forms easy-to-scoop clumps

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Only available by subscription
  • Costs significantly more than market average

#4 Best Premium: Pretty Litter Ultra-Premium Cat Litter Subscription

This lightweight, silica crystal cat litter is dust-free and comes in a fine texture that won’t irritate even the most sensitive cat paws.

Pretty Litter is available in a convenient monthly subscription, with a full bag lasting up to 30 days for a single cat. If you have multiple cats, simply add an extra litter box for each. The unique silica materials absorb odor and eliminate moisture while dehydrating solid waste, making it easy to keep the litter box clean and tidy.

The biggest downside to Pretty Litter is the cost, which can be an issue since you may find the bag doesn’t last a full month if your cats share litter boxes. What makes it worth the money, however, is that it changes color at different urine pH levels which can help you catch certain health issues early while they’re still treatable.

What We Liked:

  • Helps alert you to changes in your cat’s urine
  • Lightweight silica materials, soft sand-like texture
  • Dehydrates solid waste, eliminates liquid waste

What We Didn’t Like:

  • One bag may not last a full month for multiple cats
  • Fairly pricey option, especially compared to other silica-based litters

#5 Best Lightweight Cat Litter: Cat’s Pride Complete Care Unscented Hypoallergenic Multi-Cat Clumping Litter

Cat's Pride Complete Care Unscented Hypoallergenic Multi-Cat Clumping Litter

This litter is ideal for picky cats. Because it is unscented, the cats should not shy away from it due to a strong fragrance that you’ll find in most other natural cat litter products. It’s also hypoallergenic, so those cats with allergies and sensitivities should be safe and comfortable while using it.

On top of that, it manages to prevent and kill odors quickly, providing instant protection against bad smells and keeping your litter box smelling nice for a long time. On the downside, there can be quite a bit of tracking with this product, and it can take a lot of work to keep the litter box area clean.

What We Liked:

  • Works very quickly to get rid of odors
  • Ideal for sensitive cats
  • Allergen free

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Can be messy to clean up

#6 Best Scented Cat Litter: Jonny Cat Complete Multi-Cat Clay Litter Bag

Jonny Cat litter is pretty potent stuff. It can handle multiple cats without a problem, and it sells for far cheaper than most of the products on this list. The only problem with it is that it tracks everywhere, and you are going to be cleaning this stuff up a lot, so make sure you know your cat’s tracking habits before you buy too much of this litter.

Some cats will not leave dusty footprints everywhere when using this litter, while others will make a huge mess throughout the day, so knowing how fastidious your cat is in the litter box is key before picking this litter.

What We Liked:

  • One of the most cost-effective cat litter products available
  • Powerful odor guard
  • Odor protection lasts for a while

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Can leave a mess behind

#7 Best Unscented Cat Litter: Dr. Elsey’s Cat Ultra-Premium Clumping Cat Litter

Many clay cat litters contain silica dust which can contribute to lung disease with long-term exposure. This respiratory relief clumping cat litter is specifically designed to control respiratory disease by being hypoallergenic, low in dust, and free from perfumes and deodorants.

In addition to being low in dust, this clay cat litter also comes in a formulation that  contains natural essences which help reduce stress.

It is also made to be just about as dust-free as cat litter can get. Compared to some of the other litter products on this list, it gives you a lot less cleaning up to do. The clumping action basically eliminates dust, and this is ideal for people who have a number of messy cats in their household.

What We Liked:

  • Low-dust formula uniquely designed to prevent respiratory problems
  • Hard-clumping action, locks in odor and moisture on contact
  • The hypoallergenic formula is free from plant proteins, perfumes, and deodorants, and contains natural essences to help reduce stress

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Not as good at controlling odor as some of the competition
  • May become sticky when wet, can stick to the sides of the litter box

Things To Consider Before Buying Cat Litter For Multiple Cats

If you are picking out a multi-cat litter product, you will need to keep a few things in mind to improve your chances of being happy with the final results:

  • You may need multiple boxes- It may be a good idea to buy enough cat litter to keep a couple of litter boxes full. If you have multiple cats, some cats may be territorial and not let other cats use the same litter box they like to use. According to Cat Behavior Expert Melina Grin, having multiple boxes can cut down on a lot of fighting between your cats.
  • Pick something that your cat will be okay with- Some cats are very picky about the kind of litter they get: clumping or non-clumping, scented or unscented. You may have to perform some trial and error to find out what your cat prefers.
  • Know your cat’s allergies– Some cats will be allergic to the ingredients in certain cat litter products, so make sure you check ahead of time for what your cat has a sensitivity to. You may not find out until you put the litter into the box, and if your cat does have a reaction, you need to change out that litter quickly.
