Sanicat Extreme Litter Review

Share Email Pinterest Linkedin Twitter Facebook

Sanicat Extreme Litters are made from natural sodium bentonite clay, which allows for a high absorbency rate and creates immediate clumping abilities.

The clay also has a very low amount of dust and, whether you are using the scented or unscented formula, it does a good job with odor control. The porous clay, along with the immediate clumping and absorbency, also helps to make scooping easier than many other clay litters on the market.

  • We spent multiple weeks testing the litters on several cats

Brand Overview

Compared to many other clay litters, Sanicat Extreme’s natural mineral formula is designed to reduce the effects of dust inhalation, as well as reducing tracking and scattering outside of the litter box.

Also, depending on how many cats you have in your home, one 21-pound box can last anywhere from 20 to 60 days.

And, regarding their boxes, Sanicat has committed to not using any plastics in their packaging, and instead using only Sustainable Forestry Initiative-certified products in their packaging. Also, this litter is sourced, mined, manufactured and distributed in the U.S.A.

The other variety of Sanicat Extreme Cat Litter is the unscented formula.

As for the benefits for cats, even though it is a clay litter with smaller granules, it wasn’t uncomfortable on our cat’s paws and the tracking and scattering outside of the litter box was minimal. There was some dust when pouring the litter out of the boxes, but really no dust when scooping.

What Kinds Of Litter Does The Brand Offer?

Sanicat Litter offers two varieties of their Extreme formula; scented and unscented. For the most part, both of these varieties are made using the same manufacturing process, except that the scented version has a floral fragrance added for additional odor control, and the unscented version contains added baking soda for odor control. Also, both of these litters are clumping formulas.

Both Sanicat Extreme litter formulas offer the following benefits

  • Made from all-natural ingredients
  • Dust-free formula
  • Highly Absorbent
  • Clumping
  • Easily Scoopable

This clay litter is somewhat different from many other litters because of its all-natural ingredients, its eco-friendly packaging and its affordability. These factors also add to Sanicat’s appeal of being sourced, mined, manufactured and distributed in the U.S.A.

Some upsides to Sanicat Extreme Litter are that its dust-free formula, absorbency and quick-clumping ability make scooping faster and easier than many other clay litters. And, there won’t be a lot of mushy bits at the bottom of the litter box.

That being said, it definitely works better and maintains more odor control if you make sure that you scoop your litter box (or boxes) at least once daily, especially if you are in a multi-cat home.

Between urine and feces, Sanicat absorbs urine very quickly and also did a good job with clumping onto fecal matter. That being said, it definitely did a better job absorbing urine and eliminating urine odors rather than with feces.

However, the cost-per-pound ratio for Sanicat Extreme make both varieties very effective for you and your cats, as well as being very cost-effective for your budget.

#1 Sanicat Extreme Scented Litter

We tested Sanicat Extreme Scented Litter for several weeks in a multi-cat home.

Michael Vogelsang / Cats.com

The dust-free formula and all-natural ingredients make this litter a more attractive option than many other clay litters available on the market. And, even though Sanicat Extreme isn’t a flushable litter, its SFI-certified packaging still makes it a more environmentally friendly option.

Sanicat Extreme’s granules seemed average in size compared to most other clay litters. And, even though there will be some dust when pouring it into your litter box, there was practically no dust when scooping. Also, the sodium bentonite clay is highly absorbent and doesn’t tend to get very mushy over time.

With that in mind, the scented formula, which contains a floral scent, does a good job with odor control. And, since it’s a clumping formula, it’s very easy to know when scooping needs to be done, and the litter works better if it’s done at least once daily or more depending on how many cats you have in your home.

Pros

  • Made from all-natural ingredients
  • Virtually dust-free
  • Extremely absorbent

Cons

  • May have a strong floral scent
  • Some dust when pouring

This litter comes in a 21-pound box. And due to its sodium bentonite formula, the box might feel a little heavy compared to other litters made from other ingredients. However, the packaging includes a built-in handle to make lifting and carrying it easier.

#2 Sanicat Extreme Unscented Litter

We tested Sanicat Extreme Unscented Litter for several weeks in a multi-cat home.

Michael Vogelsang / Cats.com

Like the scented formula, this litter is made from all-natural ingredients, is virtually dust-free and comes in environmentally friendly SFI-certified packaging. The main difference with this litter is that it is unscented, but still contains baking soda to help reduce odors.

The size of the granules and the general consistency of the unscented formula are basically identical to the scented formula, with some dust when pouring but virtually no dust when scooping. And, just like the scented variety, the unscented litter is highly absorbent and won’t get mushy or smelly if scooped regularly.

Because of the added baking soda, the unscented litter does a better job than may be expected compared to the scented litter. So, if you’re sensitive to chemically added fragrances in your cat litter, Sanicat Extreme Unscented Litter is a very good option.

Positive Customer Reviews for Sanicat Extreme Scented Litter

Our cats didn’t feel the difference so I’m very happy Sanicat came into our lives.” –Carlos, reviewing Sanicat Extreme Scented Cat Litter

Negative Customer Reviews for Sanicat Extreme Scented Litter
