About Purizon

Purizon cat foods is one of the many brands made by Matina GMBH, a German pet food manufacturer based in Munich. The company makes foods, snacks, and other products for dogs, cats, and a variety of pets. All of their recipes are free from soya, sugar, artificial colorings, flavorings, and preservatives.

Some of Matina’s other cat food brands include: Catessy, Concept for Life, Concept for Life Veterinary Diet, Feringa, Greenwoods, My Star, Cosma, Rosie’s Farm, Smilla, Tigeria, Tigerino, Wild Freedom, Zooplus Bio, and Zoolove.

Matina GMBH was founded in 2004-2005 with the goal of creating the right food for every pet, whatever their breed or age.

Purizon cat foods are frequently mentioned online but it’s actually not very easy to find the brand’s web site. The only way we found it was by going through the manufacturer’s site. We have found this to be true with other brands made by Matina GMBH.

Sourcing and Manufacturing

Purizon’s web site only lists their dry foods. However, we did find some wet Purizon foods online. The brand makes both cat and dog foods.

According to the Purizon web site, their dry foods are 70 percent meat or fish with 30 percent fruit, vegetables, and botanicals. They contain 0 percent grain.

All together, the Purizon foods have about 40 percent protein content. According to the company, the recipes are a sustainable and appropriate food for carnivorous animals. The formulas are also enriched with top quality salmon oil.

Purizon states that the chicken used in their recipes are reared on farms with species-appropriate husbandry. The salmon and herring used are freshly-caught.

Purizon doesn’t mention their manufacturing facilities so we can’t confirm anything about their manufacturing processes. There are several large pet food manufacturers in Germany but we didn’t find a listing for Matina.

Has Purizon Cat Food Been Recalled?

We didn’t find any recalls online for Purizon but our Google results are only in English. If there have been any recalls in Germany or other countries, they may not always show up.

#3 Purizon Kitten Grain-Free Chicken & Fish Cat Food

Sometimes we complain because there are not more good kitten foods. It’s nice to see a kitten food from Purizon. It is a dry food but that can make it easy to feed a growing kitten that is eating frequent meals.

This kitten formula is similar to the Purizon adult grain-free chicken and fish formula. It’s high in protein with 44 percent overall protein. It contains 70 percent selected meat and fish; and 30 percent fruit, vegetables, and herbs. It has zero grain. And, it contains no artificial preservatives, taste enhancers, or colors.

Where it differs from the adult formula is that it contains extra calcium to contribute to the proper development of your kitten’s bones and teeth. The calcium is also well-balanced with phosphorus.

The fresh herring in the food, as well as the herring oil, are rich in omega-3 and omega-6 unsaturated fatty acids. They contribute to a healthy skin and shiny coat. The oil from herring (and other fish) is also a good source of DHA and EPA which is beneficial for the brain and vision development of growing kittens. Eggs are a high quality source of protein. They contain vitamins, minerals, and zeaxanthin and lutein to support healthy eye function.

What Do Customers Think of Purizon Cat Food?

Purizon cat foods are only sold on a couple of retail sites. Fortunately, there are plenty of customer reviews. Most of the reviews we found were very positive.

Positive Reviews

Five cats from shpinx to British Shorthair to exotic and moggies all are so happy with this food great digestion no bloating purrfect for our cat family would very highly recommend. Won’t use anything else.- by Ian Lawson Reviewing Purizon Kitten Grain-Free Chicken & Fish on 22/01/19

Bought a pack of six to try on my super fussy Maine Coons. And what a surprise! They loved it! I only hope the composition doesn’t change like it did for other wet foods (ie. Feringa or MAC’s which my cats completely refuse now). Fingers crossed.- by Aggie Reviewing Purizon Adult Wet Cat Food on 03/18/22

I’ve been feeding this & other flavours of Purizon to my cats for quite a few years. They have all loved it, even my fussy eater. My kitten started having it recently & it’s gobbled up. It’s a very good quality with a high meat content & no ‘fillers’. It kept the weight on my old cat very well. I have recommended it to friends & family & all the cats have taken to it immediately. I would not feed anything else & i doubt that the cats would let me.- by Reviewing Purizon Dry Cat Food on 05/29/20

Negative Reviews

I have a multi-cat household and previously Purizon was the one food that all of my cats would eat and really enjoy. I have noticed on the last two orders that the size of the kibble has decreased and with it the cats enjoyment of it. Now two of my cats will no longer eat it and the others eat it eventually rather than immediately as they did before.- by Elaine Hogan Reviewing Purizon Kitten Grain-Free Chicken & Fish on 29/08/18

Got this food for my Maine coon. Hi loved this food very much but approximately after a week on this food he got a severe diarrhoea ( 5-6 times a day very liquid poo). But my two other feral cats had no problem and loved this food.- by Vita Reviewing Purizon Large Adult Grain-Free Chicken & Fish on 10/03/21

How Much Does Purizon Cat Food Cost?

We found the dry foods for €2.69 for 150 gram bags. They were €5.99 for 400 gram bags. The 2.5 kg bags are priced at €29.99. The 6.5 kg bags of dry food are selling for €55.49.

There is some slight variation, depending on the meat protein, but most of the dry foods we found met these prices. For the Purizon wet foods, we found them being sold in 6 packs of 200 gram cans. They cost around €11.49 for the 6-pack.

Overall, Is Purizon Cat Food a Good Choice?

We thought that both the Purizon wet and dry foods were very good quality foods. We can recommend both kinds of food. They appear to be made with plenty of named meat and fish protein. They are also grain-free. And, they contain no added artificial colors, flavor enhancers, or colors.

As for comparisons to other cat foods, we thought that Purizon’s dry foods might be similar to the British AATU. Their wet foods seem similar to Meowing Heads in terms of protein percentage, being grain-free, and other factors.

How Do You Order Purizon Cat Food?

According to Matina GMBH, the manufacturer of Purizon, the brand is only sold on Zooplus.co.uk and Bitiba.co.uk in Britain. In fact, the Purizon web site links directly to these online retailers for English-speakers.

However, we found Purizon cat food sold on German Amazon (English language) and from some other online pet food retailers. Whether these are legitimate dealers or not, we can’t say.

Hello Veronica, thank you for asking! That’s a great question. The caloric weight basis is calculated by looking at the caloric density of the food and the percentage by weight of each nutrient. By considering the calorie content of each nutrient type, we’re able to find out how calories are distributed across the food. In most cases, though, the dry matter analysis is the most common and the easiest to interpret. I would look at that one first!
